Project Proposal
On the 4th
of March I will fly close to 40 hours on a plane, heading to Malawi
Africa to work in a medical clinic for my Junior year internship. I
will be working with Dr. Young, a doctor from New Zealand stationed
in Malawi on the African Bible College campus. I will be working with
Dr. Young, as well as in other parts of the clinic learning as much
as I can about doing medical work in a developing country. This
clinic works with people within the America community at the college,
as well as with those living within Malawi in surrounding villages.
The clinic treats anything which does not require hospitalization, if
there is a very serious problem, there is a hospital an hour away for
more intensive care. I will also get the opportunity to work in the
hospital and potentially watch surgeries there to gain more
experience.
My mentor is Dr. Diane Young, she is originally from New Zealand but is stationed in Malawi as a doctor working in the African Bible College campus clinic. I hope to learn a lot about what doing medical work in a developing countries is like from her, and hopefully gain skills of my own.
I want to Go to college, get into medical school, and then move to Africa to be a doctor to women who are mistreated and cannot afford medical care. This LINK internship will help me to get a taste of what this could be like, the people I could be working with, what I would do on a daily basis, and will help me to solidify if this is really something I want to pursue as a life goal.
For my LINK internship project I will be creating a document binder of various operations and procedures I learn while at my internship. These procedures will be written in paragraph form, and then supported by pictures. Each procedure will include why it is done, how it is done, what it fixes within the body. This is a way for me to re-visit what I learned while in Africa, and create a visual piece which I can use as evidence of my internship, and is something I can add to resumes or applications when applying for jobs, college, or medical schools.
To complete my LINK project, I will need to be sure I learn each procedure taught to me, and am able to reiterate it in my project. I may also need to do additional research on each procedure to gain a deeper understanding of why it is done, and what it does to help the body. I will need to be able to find pictures of these procedures as a good visual to go along with my LINK project.
As far as setting up my LINK internship I have not run in to many problems along the way, most everything has fallen into place almost perfectly. My mom originally emailed one of her friends from growing up in Africa asking if there was a way I could come and live with them for a month during my internship. She (Marianne Spencer) wrote back saying they would love to have me, had an extra room I could stay in, and that there was a doctor on the campus I could work with, and a hospital near by I could potentially go to. I emailed Dr. Young and she agreed to become my mentor for the internship, everything fell into place, there have not been many struggles to make this work out. I still need to work on getting vaccinations and other medications I will need to ensure safety during travel.
I am very excited about my internship and hope it will be an opportunity to learn about working as a doctor in the developing world. I am also nervous to travel all the way by myself and arrive in a country where I don't know anyone, however everyone I have talked to seems very nice, willing to help me, and make this a fulfilling trip.
