Artist Statement:
My political campaign poster represents
my perspective on abortion, that every unborn child is human and should be
treated as such. Through this visual piece I wanted to show how even before
birth, a fetus is still human, and using these quotes, show that an unborn child
should not be harmed. I used ethos in this visual piece with both the quote from
Ronald Reagan, as well as the quote from John Stuart Mills, a libertarian
philosopher. They are two influential men in history who's principles and ideas
I was able to incorporate throughout my op-ed. Pathos is also present in this
piece with the picture of the baby. The picture shows the baby's face and
fingers, to show that even when inside the womb, a fetus is still human, and to
bring the feeling of pity for children being aborted. The use of dark colors in
my poster show the dark side of abortion, how it is death. I made the words,
“Have already been born” in bright red to emphasize them and their meaning. All
aspects of this poster were incorporated to show that abortion is murder, and
even before birth a child is human.

The Miracle You See in the Mirror Everyday
She would have grown up with three
brothers, pigtails, dresses. She would have gone to school. She would have
worked at an ice cream parlor, graduated the top of her class from Harvard. She
would have been married, had children of her own. She would have grown up to be
a beautiful, successful woman... had she been given the chance to
live.
Although abortion ensures freedom
for the mother, killing an unborn child takes away the baby's chance at life and
should be considered murder.
In 1970 a woman by the name of Jane
Roe filed suit against district attorney of Dallas, Henry Wade, to invalidate
the state law of illegal abortions. Roe stated that this law banning abortion,
“violated the guarantee of personal liberty and the right to privacy implicitly
guaranteed in the First, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, and Fourteenth amendments”
(Justice). This is the idea that were abortions to be illegalized, the right to
privacy ensured by the Constitution would be neglected, and thus take away the
freedom to make a choice in the case of abortion
(Health).
While citizens should have the freedom of privacy,
granting this to women in the case of abortion should be considered murder of
the child.
Unborn children are human. To state
that an unborn child is not human is stating that a fetus is a part of the
mother's body during pregnancy. Women many times believe that their babies are
part of their body until birth, rather than the baby and mother being separate
beings. However, from conception, a fetus is not simply a part of the mother's
body. A child has it's own individual cells, genetic code, and in many cases
blood types, separating the child from his or her mother (Part). They are not
just a 'part of the body' a mother can decide to terminate. At no time during
pregnancy does a mother have four arms or four legs, the mother and child are
separate from each other.
In the 18th century, a libertarian
philosopher by the name of John Stuart Mills developed a principle stating that,
“the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of
a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others” (Mills).
Each person should have the freedom to do with themselves what they wish, so
long as it does not bring harm to another. This is known as the harm principle.
A woman should have the right to do with her body what she wishes. In the case
of abortion, however, her actions are bringing harm to the child, taking away
this liberty, as unborn children are their own entity.
Legalizing abortion would in fact
be opposing the constitution, in amendment 5 it states, “No person...shall be
deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law...” (Fifth).
This amendment ensures that no one will have their life, freedom, or property
taken from them without first partaking in a fair trial and obtaining a judge
ruling. Due process of law is a, "...constitutional guarantee that all legal
proceedings will be fair and that one will be given notice of the proceedings
and an opportunity to be heard before the government acts to take one's life..."
(Hill). This amendment clearly states that before a death sentence may be laid
before them, a child must first have access to a fair trial where he or she may
speak for themselves. Unborn children are not given this opportunity, before
their lives are terminated.
Article 6.5 of the International
Covenant on Civil and Political Rights states that, “Sentence of death... shall
not be carried out on pregnant women” (International). The death penalty may be
issued to women, however because the fetus inside the mother is recognized as
human, he or she will not also be condemned to the same fate, nor accept
responsibility for the mistakes of his or her mother. Clearly stated here, an
unborn child is human, and should be recognized as
such.
Statistics show that over 89,000
women are raped in the U.S. annually (Rape). Arguments have been made for
abortions to be made legal for women who become pregnant from rape. However, the
abortion issue should not qualify for women who are raped and then become
pregnant, as they are less than 2% of women who have abortions. (United)It is
the rapist who should be punished in this case, not the
child.
Out of every 1,000 children
conceived, 234 are aborted (Abortion). Almost a full quarter of the children
created in the U.S. are being killed before birth. What this comes down to is
people want convenience in their lives. Women seem to believe if they don't
think of the daughter or son they conceived (a part of them) as a real child, it
will somehow make him/her less human. If a child is wanted by the parents, it
is as human as anyone; when the unborn child becomes an inconvenience however,
it is suddenly a non-living parasite that needs to be killed. We need to accept
responsibility and realize that every child is a miracle and should be treated
as one.
